Creating a country imbued with a scientific culture was Jawaharlal Nehru’s dream, and immediately after independence he prepared a grand design to achieve it. Among the temples of modern India which he designed, was a centre of excellence in the medical sciences. Nehru’s dream was that such a centre would set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia , and in this he had the wholehearted support of his Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.
All-India Institute of Medical Sciences was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.
The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees. Teaching and research are conducted in 42 disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS is the lead, having more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing and trains students for B.Sc.(Hons.) Nursing post-certificate) degrees.
Twenty-five clinical departments including four super specialty centers manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre- and Para-clinical departments. However, burn cases, dog-bite cases and patients suffering from infectious diseases are not entertained in the AIIMS Hospital. AIIMS also manages a 60-beded hospital in the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Ballabgarh in Haryana and provides health cover to about 2.5 lakh population through the Centre for Community Medicine.
Objectives of AIIMS
- To develop a pattern of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches so as to demonstrate high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India.

ARMED FORCES MEDICAL COLLEGE,PUNE (AFMC, PUNE)
Armed Forces Medical College is a premier medical institute of India acknowledged as a centre of excellence for education and research. The college provides training to under-graduate and post-graduate medical and nursing students with assured career prospects in the defence services.
The institute was set up on 01 May 1948 by an act of parliament of India on the recommendations of the BC Roy Committee by the amalgamation of various defence medical organizations. The “Graduate Wing” of AFMC was established on 04 August 1962 to provide a sustainable and steady intake of medical officers for the Indian Armed Forces. The institute is presently affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the MCI for conducting undergraduate and various post graduate medical courses.

In 2008, JIPMER attained the status of an Institution of National Importance vide the JIPMER Act passed in parliament. The institute is deemed to be a university and awards its own degrees and diplomas which are on a par with those recognized by the Medical Council of India.

Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal , established on June 30, 1953, by late Dr. T. M. A. Pai a constituent institute of Manipal University.The Kasturba Medical College started with only the pre-clinical section at Manipal as the students had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. In 1969, when the clinical programme started in Manipal, KMC became a full-fledged independent college.
Kasturba Medical College is the first college in the private sector and ranks among the top five medical colleges in the country today. Students from 44 countries have graduated from the college, and its degrees are recognized worldwide. With the first graduating class of students in 1958, KMC was granted recognition by the Medical Council of India. Recognition by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council soon followed. Today, Manipal University (of which KMC is a constituent college) degrees are recognized in all countries. The physical facilities for research work and student amenities have been steadily developed over the years. The 200-acre campus provides one of the finest environments for study in south Asia.
ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY (AMU) / JAWAHARLAL NEHRU MEDICAL COLLEGE (JNMS)
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JN Medical College or JNMC) is a medical college located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of Aligarh Muslim University. The medical college was declared open on 2 October 1962 (the 93rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) with an intake of 1st Batch of 40 MBBS students and the same strength continued up to 1984. The intake was increased from 40 to 100 students in 1985 and this remained so up to 1995. The academic session of 1996–97 witnessed a further increase in the intake of MBBS students up to 150 as well as beginning of BDS course with intake of 40 students in the first batch by the permission of MCI and DCI respectively.
